Who must register?
All home builders or developers intending to construct new homes in South Africa must register with the NHBRC.

What are the required documents?
To register, submit a completed NHBRC application form with the following supporting documents:
- Company registration documents (e.g. COR14.1, COR14.1A, COR14.3, CM29, CK1, CK2)
- Certified copies of ID or passport
- If you use a passport: include a valid work permit.
- Proof of residence
- Bank confirmation letter
- Appointment letter for the Technical Manager confirming technical competence
- Valid Tax Clearance Certificate
- Ownership/structure documents (as applicable):
- Share certificate, or
- Trust resolution or trust deed, or
- Partnership agreement, or
- Co-operative constitution
Tip: Ensure all copies are clear, certified, and current to avoid delays.
Why must builders register with the NHBRC?
By law, any company or individual involved in building homes must be registered with the NHBRC (National Home Builders Registration Council).
Registration not only ensures compliance with the Housing Consumers Protection Act, but also provides several important benefits:
- Recognition as a compliant and accredited home builder
- Access to financing support, as financial institutions recognise NHBRC-registered builders
- Availability of NHBRC mediation services to resolve disputes
- Opportunities to participate in NHBRC training programmes and access building resources
Who is eligible to write exam?
A technical representative of the company, such as a builder or site supervisor, must take the NHBRC assessment exam.
How does the assessment work?
The assessment evaluates your knowledge of home building standards, construction safety, and compliance with NHBRC regulations.
How much does it cost to register for NHBRC?
When applying to the NHBRC, there is a once-off application fee of R745.61 (non-refundable) that must be paid before you can attend the compulsory Builder’s Induction Workshop. In addition to this, there is an annual membership fee of R526.32 that needs to be renewed each year to keep your registration active.

What are the NHBRC warranty periods?
NHBRC typically covers major structural defects for 5 years, roof leaks for 1 year, and minor defects for 3 months from occupancy.

Can I take the test online?
No. The NHBRC test is written in person at official testing centres.

Can I write the NHBRC test as an individual or do I have to register a company?
You can write as an individual — many register as sole proprietors. If you have a registered building company, you can appoint a technical manager to write on your behalf.
